This session will discuss origin of ideas for films, what can inspire to tell a story? Prakash Jha will share his journey in the world of Cinema: His progression from a documentary Film maker further into the Artistic commercial Cinema. He will discuss stories that draw upon real world events, such as Gangaajal (2003) based on Bhagalpur blinding incidents in Bihar between 1979 to 1980, as well as adapting literary works. Examples include (i)Kaalsootra to DAMUL (1985) (ii) Rabindranath Tagore’s novel NASTANIRH (The broken Nest) to CHARULATA (1964) by Satyajit Ray.

- What is Drama in a story – Traditional Drama writing & Modern Drama writing
- Practical hands on aspects of Screenplay writing – Prakash Jha to discuss in detail the art of writing for screen. A few scenes from his movies to be discussed in class – Rajneeti, Mrityudand, Gangaajal etc.

Editing a Film

For these two modules: Director Jha will discuss the practical lessons on the entire process of shooting a film, including all three stages : Pre- production, production and Post production, such as Location, Cast, Lighting, Camera, Editing, Music, Sound design, Mixing etc. In addition, he will also screen some of the exclusive behind the scenes footage of his highly acclaimed films which will give the students an idea about the whole process of shooting a film.
